A minimum of 64 Killed in Rio's Largest Law Enforcement Operation on Criminal Groups
No less than 64 people were killed in a law enforcement action targeting the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's history.
Four police officers were among those killed during the security mission in the AlemĂŁo and Penha districts, government representatives said. Over 80 people were detained.
Fierce clashes erupted when about 2,500 police forces moved in on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command responded with gunfire, setting fire to barriers and dropping bombs from drones, authorities stated.
The International human rights organization said it was "shocked" by the police operation, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements near Rio's airport is regarded as the main base of a major illegal networks.
State officials confirmed at least 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Many residents were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Community Response
Community members have compared the elevated neighborhood - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.

Organized Crime Spread
The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and control of the hillside favelas.
Local law enforcement reported over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were seized in the mission, along with dozens of firearms.

The joint operation by civil and military police was preceded by a year-long investigation.
Numerous alleged criminals are believed to be members of a faction from the Pará state who are at the moment taking refuge in the metropolitan area.
