A Pair of Cuba-Headed Humanitarian Sailboats Reported Missing after Setting Sail from the Coast of Mexico.
A extensive search and recovery operation is actively in progress in the Caribbean waters for a pair of missing boats carrying relief goods en route from Mexico to the island of Cuba.
Naval Rescue Operations Initiated
Authorities in Mexico has deployed navy personnel and search planes to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting at least nine total crew members, according to a official statement.
The vessels had been projected to reach Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their docking, authorities reported.
The Situation of Aid to the Nation
The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the island struggles through widespread nationwide blackouts.
"Both captains and crews are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are equipped with proper navigational gear and signalling equipment," an official involved in the effort stated.
The nine individuals on board are citizens of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their consular staff.
"We are collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.
Previous Relief Delivery
Previously that week, the government in Havana widely celebrated and warmly received another boat that had carried 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the island.
That ship, dubbed "Granma 2.0" after the boat in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, carried solar panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, bikes and provisions.
Broader Political Climate
Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of efforts to ship essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a oil sanctions on the island nation began.
International organizations have since warned of ""critical" shortages of supplies, with in excess of 50,000 operations called off in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.
Foreign policy tensions have increased in recent months, with remarks from various representatives emphasizing the complicated situation regarding bilateral relations.
Reacting to recent proposals, a prominent government figure declared that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Accounts suggest that early stages of negotiations had begun, although their ongoing development remains unclear.
The maritime authorities said it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its reach to find the sailboats and secure the security of the crews.
To date, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
