A trader earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was made public, raising questions about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the event.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be removed from office by the end of January rose in the time leading up to President Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform recently and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a modest bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the midday period of the prior Friday.

But the market's assessment had jumped to eleven percent by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of January 3rd, pointing to a rapid movement in positions just before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a bet based on inside information," stated a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other individuals also profited significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week would prevent public officials from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the United States, with users able to wager on everything from sports to current affairs.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting arena.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
