Approximately fifty cars have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.
Officers say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then found multiple other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials state preliminary tests show the fluid was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; investigators are presently not cognizant of any harm in association with the incident," they added.
City officials stated they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the public for details.
A senior official commented the attack made him speechless and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This event strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
