Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause
Relinquishing unwanted offerings can be viewed as somewhat rude – unless it's done for a noble purpose.
A Charitable Auction
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will offload around 270 gifts given to her by international figures while abroad. This unusual assortment is said to contain gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.
The presents, combined, are valued at around €800,000. They will be put up for sale to the highest bidder by a Rome-based art dealer. An exact timeline has not been finalized, but the aim is to hold the auction during the holiday season, with all funds raised benefiting various charities.
Palazzo Chigi Holdings
The presents are currently kept in a storage room on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. Reports indicate that Meloni is also planning to auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been gathering dust over a long period.
The detailed catalog is yet to be disclosed, but a glimpse was gleaned earlier this year when a detailed register of items received was reviewed by officials. The discussion focused on whether a legal value limit was being followed. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents worth more than €300.
An International Assortment of Presents
Among the items:
- A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
- A set of adornments from the Slovakian president.
- A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
- A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
- A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
- Paintings from the Moldovan government.
- An assortment including makeup, a skateboard, and numerous carpets from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the oddest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," observers have said.
Diplomatic Backdrop
The prime minister has received praise, mainly from her own political sphere, with building relationships with global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a prominent force on the global scene once again.
This charitable initiative represents a distinct method to handle the state presents that build up during a time in office.
