Eurovision Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.

A new acronym surfaced a couple of months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is unique to Gaza, as stated by medical experts such as paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is unusual for medical staff to care for a minor who has lost their complete family. However, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary in many doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.

A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that genocidal acts are continuing. The Israeli government has denied these allegations, just as it disavows all charges it is accused of. But while young survivors are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, although at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, we are told, is what international harmony resembles.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an bid to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Contest Continues Amidst Staggering Tragedy

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of a person in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it historically embodied. An institution that was originally built on togetherness has now become a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
