Israelis have assembled across the country to remember two years since the Hamas-led assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.

The incident led to in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most fatal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.

Israel answered by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.

"Our violent enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.

He also pledged to "achieve all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will not create a danger to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The national leadership postponed formal commemorations until October 16th - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but events still were held around the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the relatives of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast throughout Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held throughout the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' representatives gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the plan.

A senior delegate knowledgeable about the negotiations indicated that an late session of indirect talks commenced at 7 PM local time.

The official stated the day's discussions finished without concrete outcomes, due to disagreements over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence fighting after the first phase of the deal.

He commented that the negotiations are "difficult and have yet to achieve any real breakthrough," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to close the differences between the both parties.

Critical Issues in Talks

  • A permanent ceasefire
  • The swap of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for assistance provision
  • Post-war administration of the region

Citizen Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, young Hagar - whose brother survived the incident on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were murdered and numerous more were captured by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place seems like home now and until each abducted person come back no one will feel safe."

"Once we see all home returned, we can breathe once more. Then we can commence recover," she added.

Near the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their support for the relatives of the abducted. Israel says forty-eight continue in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be surviving.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev explained: "We must do whatever arrangement necessary for the captives to return. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."

Research now consistently show that around the majority of Israeli citizens want the hostilities to conclude in as payment for the freedom of the hostages.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the area of Nova festival, grieving people came together to remember the victims.

From that location, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli attacks persisted.

In the main city, bombardments were documented in the early hours of Tuesday in the western district, sector and locality areas and in the east side area of the community, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"Once the dusk comes, the fear arrives with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike earlier, described.

"My family are afraid of the air strikes. During nighttime we are resting together, embracing, particularly my smallest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we look at the news to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be achieved and that the war will return to us."

Humanitarian Situation

The medical facility in the urban area said it had accepted the bodies of several people by the daytime, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part area.

A different healthcare center in the south region of the city reported additional dead people had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli troops while looking for aid to the southern area, health workers said.
