Judge Fatally Shot in Courtroom Incident in Albania

An individual on trial opened fire inside a court building in the capital city of Albania, Tiranë, on the start of the week, fatally wounding the presiding judge and injuring two other people, as stated by law enforcement.

The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended afterward.

Particulars of the Fatal Event

The court official Astrit Kalaja was fired upon inside the courtroom by a 30-year-old suspect with the initials E. Sh., according to police.

The judge succumbed to injuries while during transport for treatment.

Additional Injuries

The gunman also shot two other people involved in the hearing, police said.

Their injuries were not critical.

Ongoing Probe

Authorities have yet to disclose information about the possible reason or the type of proceeding being presided over.

The case listing accessed via the court’s website indicated a property case.

Police subsequently detained the alleged shooter and also found a handgun believed to be the weapon used.

After sweeping judicial changes initiated several years ago with support from the European Union and United States, tens of thousands of cases in Albania have been delayed for years.
