Kenya's Police Officer Killed in Bow-and-Arrow Attack at Entrance of Presidential Official Home
An officer of the Kenyan police force assigned to one of the access points of the president's official residence in Nairobi has passed away after being shot with an arrow, police reported.
Police said that on Monday morning, a 56-year-old man, equipped with a bow and arrow set, came near guards at the gate of State House and was commanded to disarm. Contrarily, he advanced and struck Police Constable Matanka in the chest area.
The constable was immediately taken to medical facility but succumbed during medical care, based on a law enforcement announcement.
This incident has raised questions about possible security lapses as the official home is one of the country's most heavily guarded sites.
The constable's body is now in a morgue and there will be a post-mortem in the coming days.
A probe is also under way to identify the cause of the assault.
Local media are indicating that the deceased officer had been among those screening vehicles coming into State House.
The suspect, who had reportedly disguised himself as a homeless person holding a sack masking the weapons, was apprehended after the assault.
Video footage, released by domestic broadcaster on Monday afternoon, showed a restrained individual with visible injuries. He was in a police vehicle and was reportedly being transported for medical care.
The suspect is expected to appear in the judicial system in the coming days, local media are reporting.
"The police force criticizes this terrible crime and praises the personnel for their swift response, which avoided additional casualties," law enforcement spokesman the spokesperson stated.
He expressed sympathy to the relatives of the dead policeman, noting that the officer had "paid the ultimate price in the line of duty".
