Board Resignation
The economist announced he would step back from public positions after House committee disclosed his repeated correspondence with the financier

One-time economic leader Larry Summers is departing from the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a collection of electronic messages between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.

The economist remarked in a statement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have contributed, excited about the potential of the enterprise, and look forward observing their development".

Summers, who formerly presided over the Ivy League institution, announced on recently that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.

Message Exchange

The recently released communications revealed that Summers corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 detention for suspected human trafficking of minors.

In additional comments, the AI firm expressed it accepted his determination to depart.

"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the insight he offered to the governing body," OpenAI commented.

Congressional Action

This development comes after the two houses of Congress agreed on this week to approve a measure that would compel the federal prosecutors to make public its files on the case.

The measure will subsequently head to the office of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. The President has said he intends to endorse the legislation, after changing his position on the issue following objections from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A batch of Epstein-connected correspondence made public by the legislative panel recently included numerous prominent individuals in the financier's former circle, without suggesting any criminal activity by those people.

The communications revealed that Summers and Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often trying to link the academic to influential international personalities.

Individual Statement

After the correspondence were released with the public, Summers stated he took "full responsibility for my ill-advised judgment to maintain communicating with the financier".

He added that he desired "to restore confidence and repair relationships with the individuals most important to me".

Professional History

Summers served in senior posts under party leaders; functioning as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under President Obama.

He led the institution from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a faculty member there. When announcing his step-down from public roles previously on this week, he indicated he would continue his teaching commitments.

Other Impacts

Following Summers' declaration on Monday, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning research organization in DC where the professor was a senior fellow, announced that the economist was not connected with the institution.

Summers became part of the leadership of the AI company, which makes the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a defeated move to remove its CEO the company leader.
