Monte Cook and Monte Cook Are Teaching Classes at Dungeon Master Academy
Beginning in 2018, Tabletop Vacations has been organizing immersive events where expert DMs manage Dungeons & Dragons games in old manors in the UK and at Landoll’s Mohican Castle. The comprehensive packages are widely appreciated among forever DMs who rarely get the chance to join in the game themselves, and they often look for guidance from seasoned professionals on topics ranging from improv and creating challenges to managing conflicts at the table.
In response, the coordinators began designing a structured way to answer these inquiries, which led to the founding of the Dungeon Master Academy. The debut workshop is set for early January 2026 at a university in Atlanta.
“It's possible to view numerous digital guides on any topic and learn quite a lot, but the concept was that nothing truly replaces an in-person experience together with fellow DMs, where real-time interaction with faculty instructors and your fellow DMs often in the same boat and aim to level up their game,” stated Jason Carl.
Course Offerings and Pricing Tiers
DMs can opt for options ranging from nearly a thousand dollars to two thousand five hundred dollars, based on the level of access they desire with the experts. The base tier includes a choice of four workshops:
- Core Techniques: Covers the basics of leading a game.
- Campaign Building: Focuses around building persistent adventures.
- Universe Design: Concentrates on the art of setting design.
- Industry Advancement: Designed for DMs who seek to understand more about the tabletop profession.
Each course includes eight hours of training split over a weekend.
“The courses are designed so that you depart having usable skills, enhanced belief in your abilities, and a lot of usable tools,” Carl explained. “It's more than presentations and they’re not just static videos. These are sessions that you can join, absorb insights from, and then return to your group the following week and apply in your regular session.”
Seasoned Educators
Many sessions are taught by a pair of experts. Universe creation is guided by an industry veteran and Keith Baker, both teaching the craft of setting creation.
Career building includes four different teachers, such as an author on gaming puzzles, Clint McElroy, and Hunter Fell. The extra instructors is intended to deliver focused advice to participants with definite objectives.
“Some of them want to launch their own real-play series and share their stories with the world, some of them want to publish and develop fresh ideas,” Carl said. “Others simply wish to ask, How do I get to be a DM at an event like D&D in a Castle? What are the skills that I need? Is this achievable?”
Premium Packages
A fifteen hundred dollar enhanced option includes access to a opening gathering, a introductory package, and a half-hour consultation appointment with a teacher. This constitutes the inaugural DMU session, though the organizers has previously run Castle Days during breaks between game sessions at their castle events.
“You could almost run an complete event just on one-on-one meetings for career game masters,” Carl said. “I don’t know if that’s the most effective utilization of all participants' schedule – In my opinion the structured learning and the lab work is extremely important – but I think it’s going to be a highly favored parts of the program.”
The twenty-five hundred dollar platinum tier offers an hour of one-on-one time and the possibility to lead a session for five players plus one of the faculty members, who will then offer feedback and guidance.
“The purpose is for the faculty member to assess whatever the DM is focused on: Hey I don’t do well with spontaneous decisions or I feel stuck in certain battle scenarios. Can I run a scenario for you and obtain advice on where I excel and need improvement?” Carl said. “Or maybe they want to get feedback and advice on a definite universe that they’ve been creating.”
Next Steps
Responses from the first event will help guide subsequent DMU events. Carl suggested that potential adjustments could include increasing consultation time, lengthening the event to three days, or testing varied class arrangements.
“I anticipate that we host such events frequently,” Carl stated. “I really want to see numerous academy events in a given year, in multiple places, and in various nations. The response has been overwhelmingly favorable. We're extremely satisfied with the results so far and I feel it would be amazing to be able to conduct this in collaboration with major events.”
