Citizens advised to avoid going out as strong winds batter the country.

Powerful gales attaining velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in nearly 90,000 properties lacking electricity and led authorities to call off in excess of 100 air travel services, according to local media.

The gales are affecting the complete South Island and southern parts of the northern region, as stated by the national weather agency.

New Zealand authorities have released rare red wind warnings - the most severe warning - in central regions such as Wellington and Canterbury.

Locals have been advised to remain inside, refrain from journeys, and get ready for additional electricity and network failures.

Widespread Impact and Emergency Measures

The electricity loss is primarily influencing households predominantly in the South Island, though officials state that power was being gradually reinstated.

Local media have indicated that in certain areas structures have suffered roof damage, while trees and electricity poles have been knocked down by the gusts.

Within the capital, a man was fatally injured after being hit by a tree branch at a well-known hiking path on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a female was swept into moving cars on a street by a powerful blast, in a moment that was filmed in a popular vehicle recording.

Flights to and from the metropolis have been cancelled due to the weather, and certain highways and community centers are shut down.

Simultaneously local leaders have announced a state of emergency, to assist disaster response efforts.

But the intense climate has pressured them to change some of their plans, with several external protests relocated inside or cancelled.

Comparable winds are also sweeping the neighboring country, causing a high-temperature event to the country's outback.
