Putin Pledges Continuous Energy Shipments to India in Defiance of American Sanctions

During a clear signal to the United States, Leader Vladimir Putin has told PM Narendra Modi that Russia stands ready to guarantee “uninterrupted” supplies of crude oil to India. This declaration came as the two leaders met in the Indian capital and asserted their bilateral ties were “resistant to outside influence.”

A Signal For the Western Countries

Putin's comments, delivered Friday, seemed to be a direct challenge at the United States and its allies, which have tried to urge New Delhi into curtailing its longstanding relations with Moscow. The context is in response to previous American measures, including the imposition of trade penalties against Indian goods over its purchase of Russian oil.

“Our nation is a reliable exporter of fuel and anything needed for the growth of India’s energy sector,” Putin remarked. “Moscow stands willing to keep ensuring the uninterrupted flow of resources for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

Modi, though he did not naming energy explicitly, echoed the sentiment by noting that “a stable energy base has been a robust and vital foundation of the bilateral cooperation.”

Defying Washington's Stance

Prior to the meeting, during a television interview, Putin had challenged Washington's stance over India's oil imports. Putin stated, “When Washington is entitled to buy our uranium, then why can't India enjoy the same privilege?”

This trip was his initial visit to India following the onset of the situation in Ukraine, and the two nations engaged in a deliberate effort to project that the personal rapport between the men persisted strongly.

A Personal Greeting

Taking an notable move, the Indian PM personally greeted Putin upon his arrival. They exchanged a hearty embrace as close allies before holding a one-on-one meal together.

The Indian prime minister referred to India's alliance with Russia as “a lodestar” and added it was “built on shared respect and deep trust.”

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

The meeting yielded multiple significant pacts in the fields of military and trade relations. One significant result was the finalization of an strategic roadmap extending until 2030, which aims to double bilateral trade to a hundred billion USD annually by the target year.

The leaders also agreed to recalibrate their strategic cooperation. Even as Russia continues to be India's primary supplier of defence equipment, this role has reduced in recent years as India aims to broaden its procurement.

The joint statement emphasized plans for the joint production of sophisticated military systems, although explicit details of systems like the Sukhoi Su-57 were omitted.

Ultimately, both nations reiterated that in the “present intricate, tense, and uncertain geopolitical situation, the Indo-Russian partnership stay resilient to foreign influence.”
