Taliban Utilized Left-Behind UK Equipment to Locate Afghans Who Worked Alongside Allied Forces, Investigation Hears

A whistleblower has disclosed an official investigation that the UK abandoned classified devices permitting the Taliban to locate Afghans who worked with allied troops.

Information Leak Endangers Thousands in Danger

Person A, known as Person A, testified that Afghans affected by the data leak were instructed to change residences and switch their phone numbers to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.

MPs are investigating the Conservative government's management of a massive breach of personal details concerning approximately 19k individuals who had requested to move to the UK to escape militant rule.

How the Leak Happened

An electronic document including their personal data, such as names, contact details and occasionally household data, was inadvertently disclosed by a worker employed at special operations center in last year.

The breach was discovered in late 2023, when the names of several individuals who had applied to relocate to Britain were posted on social media.

During testimony about if militant forces owned advanced decryption, the whistleblower confirmed: “They possess all resources.”

Aftermath of the Information Leak

Early investigations presented to the investigation indicated that at least 49 relatives and co-workers of individuals impacted by the leak had been killed.

A legal restriction regarding the incident was enacted in late 2023 and restricted all details concerning it from public disclosure until July 2025.

Safety Measures

Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the volunteer organization she was working with told individuals at risk they were supporting that they had “apprehensions that somebody's phone had been intercepted”.

“We recommended that they moved where feasible and altered their mobile numbers. Those were the primary information that, should militant forces acquired such data, would cause identification and capture,” she said.

Challenged Assessments

Person A disputed that government assessment performed by an ex-government employee had been wrong to determine that the acquisition of the information by militant forces was “not significantly alter present danger”.

“The thing to remember is that these individuals are in hiding from the Taliban; they remain concealed. Everything boils down to their previous employment.”

Person A described terrible violence endured by affected individuals, involving electrocution, waterboarding, and physical abuse.

“We have had toddlers who have had their arms broken to force households to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
