The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Utter Faith' in Teenager Pitarch

The teenager has featured in seven games for Real Madrid, featuring five starts.

Whenever a 18-year-old makes club history in a crucial European match against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.

During his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a three-nil round of 16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to secure a last eight berth.

At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He signed for Real from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in January.

Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and determination he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to train with the senior squad and gave him minutes in the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his career as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing the game, every day you head to training and each day you have a game," said Pitarch following his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the world and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he spent four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His standout trait is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand fans might be surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to perform what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, progressing through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.

He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the choice to play for both nations at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they play in a official full international.

He has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the U19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.

In a recent interview, the player said: "I have not taken my final decision so far. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Brahim opted to represent Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at City, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to help the team chase future success.

Following his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my playing time on the field," he said after the success at Manchester.
