Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Passion So Long As The Three Lions' Ace Sets Aside Egotism Outside.
One snub did the trick. Another and it would have started to look vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is far too wily not to know that claiming the World Cup trophy demands help from the talented midfielder, even if it is also on the midfielder to adapt to the tactical structures and team pecking order essential with England now that he is returned to Tuchel's supportive environment.
The manager desires Bellingham's edge, his fire, but it is about harnessing it in the right way. Skill counts but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is a cost when stardom dominates. Still, a point has been made.
The midfielder had much to ponder after being left out of the recent team selection. He watched the national side qualify at the upcoming World Cup without him. He watched Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a high-pressing No 10. He heard the coach discuss valuing the team's dynamism and ethics. Naturally, he has responded in winning fashion, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid versus their rivals and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; a second snub would have put his tournament chances hanging by a thread.
The expectation is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham focused on frightening rivals rather than his own colleagues. After all, from a tactical perspective, there is no advantage to picking a fight with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has made him realize that representing the national team is a valuable, uncertain thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now provide cover around the youngster after proving that he is not afraid to make big calls.
“No issue exists regarding him, and no concern about his personality,” the German commented. “Jude just has the edge. You need a certain edge to succeed at the top that he has. Everyone must help him and establish an environment where he can channel this edge against rivals and towards the goals we are striving for as a team.”
Bellingham took up much of the focus at the manager's selection reveal for this month’s meaningless matches against Serbia and Albania. Who else? Well, what about Phil Foden? This is another prodigious playmaker requiring support and direction. Foden has not played for the national team since March and has found it hard to perform well recently but Tuchel had to consider the player after his display in his club's victory against the German side recently.
The question, however, is the best way to deploy the attacking talents at available. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze have earned their places and there will be a good argument to pick another youngster once he recovers from a ongoing injury. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be an overkill? Gareth Southgate never found the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, cramping the captain's style as a result.
It is hard to see Tuchel repeating that if it disrupts the offensive structure. There is room for one No 10, with speedy wingers on the flanks. Clarity helps. Bellingham is in as a central attacker. The new call-up, called up for the first time, is a No 8 and the recalled Wharton will battle Elliot Anderson as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for the City star, who must play through the middle. The coach wants him near the striker. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, could you fill in at left wing? Can you play right wing?” he stated. “He is to feature in the central attacking zone, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this vision about him for a long time. I think it fits his style best.”
Tuchel conceded there are occasions when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “You feel almost like, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And someone of his caliber who has obvious passion for the game, then obviously an issue exists, whether it's the position, the setup, it's unclear.
“In my opinion he is also accustomed to representing Man City in a certain structure, to have a clear task. Believe he profits a lot from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? When should I to push the tempo? What are my to defend?
The manager discussed Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and the other netting goals from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his excellent performances for City at defense. Intrigue abounds.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in this squad. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested using Foden as a false 9 versus one opponent or the other. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives should he be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for a little experimentation.
Meanwhile, it is also a moment to develop the understanding with Bellingham going. It is remarkable that one must look back to the latter assisting the captain to net in a friendly win versus Scotland in over a year ago to find the sole instance in 35 games for England when the pair linked up for a score. The coach will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with one opponent and another at the European Championship. The connection is lacking.
“At this point at some point it becomes the duty of the players,” Tuchel said. He does not shy away to speak frankly. Remains a sense of the player having to prove himself. He may not be guaranteed to begin against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants Bellingham onside but he will be monitoring him carefully. Set aside self-importance outside. Doing so could turn a very strong England team into an superior one.
