What Steps Can the Monarch Implement Regarding the Prince Andrew Controversies?

Prince Andrew's standing has suffered a further major setback with recent newspaper reports uncovering electronic communication that indicates he had ties with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein more extensively than he had previously claimed.

These allegations are extremely harmful for the Duke of York.

The revealed email places serious doubt on his account of events provided during his media interview, where he asserted he had cut ties with Epstein after meeting him in New York in December 2010, when the two were captured together.

The intimate tone of the email Andrew is alleged to have sent - "We are in this together" - also compromises efforts to suggest they were never familiar.

Scandal hasn't exactly been unfamiliar to the Duke of York.

The email released by newspapers is alleged to be from February 2011, and earlier this year one more batch of emails from that same time appeared, also suggesting that Andrew's association with Epstein had continued time later than he had stated, which triggered a similar round of harsh headlines.

What Outcomes Could Follow?

Each revelation is succeeded by requests for Prince Andrew to face some kind of royal penalty. So what pressure can the King and the Royal Family really apply? How could they distance themselves?

The next important family event for the royals is Christmas in Sandringham. And it seems unlikely that Prince Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson will be invited. He'll be excluded. And don't look for to see him in the scene in the King's Christmas message; any appearances will have been removed.

The only King that Andrew is probable to see will be if Good King Wenceslas appears on the Christmas carol playlist.

Andrew was absent from last year's traditional royal Christmas because of an alleged Chinese spy scandal, and that exclusion seems likely to extend for one more year. It won't have assisted that Sarah Ferguson has been in her own Epstein email scandal - with several of her UK charities severing ties with her.

Property and Monetary Matters

There have been frequent calls for Prince Andrew to be evicted from Royal Lodge, his large mansion in Windsor. But Andrew has his own separate lease with the Crown Estate that continues until 2078. Much of the costs of moving there were covered initially when he assumed the property in 2003, and there's minimal clear incentive for Andrew to depart now.

If Andrew can sustain to pay his bills at Royal Lodge, then it's not apparent how he can be removed.

Family sources say that the King has tried many approaches to implement pressure, like withdrawing Andrew's funding last year.

But Prince Andrew seems to have developed his own autonomous sources of finance since departing public life, including economic relationships with China, the Gulf States, and a newly limited project with a Dutch start-up company. He has shown financially resilient, despite what must be significant costs in paying for his own security.

Titles and Official Positions

There have been demands to withdraw Andrew of his titles, such as the Duke of York. That idea has significant public support, with a YouGov poll over the summer showing that 67% of people backed stripping his existing titles.

It would require the involvement of Parliament, but there is a formal mechanism. It was used during the First World War to sanction aristocrats who had UK titles but were serving in the German army.

So it's not impossible that such a meaningful move might be explored if the persistent of scandal became too much to overlook.

Andrew has remained a Knight of the Garter, a esteemed honorary award, which in concept could be withdrawn. Although at currently he doesn't participate in the yearly public event in Windsor and is restricted to the non-public parts of the yearly ceremony.

There was once an complex process for removing someone from being a participant of the Order of the Garter, known as "degradation". But that hasn't been used since the 18th Century. More currently individuals were simply stripped, such as the leaders of Britain's opponents in the First World War, Wilhelm II of Germany and Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary.

Benito Mussolini, Robert Mugabe, and Nicolae Ceausescu all had honors withdrawn. Although the last-mentioned, the Romanian dictator, had his Order of the Bath honor withdrawn the day before he was killed by a firing squad, so it might not have seemed his greatest worry.

Current Situation

On previous form, the Palace has preferred a more indirect approach to withdrawing status. There was awkwardness that Prince Andrew remained a advisor of state, who could deputise for the King if he was absent of the country or was indisposed. Rather than openly remove him, additional counsellors were established in 2022 so that Prince Andrew would never have to be employed.

Prince Andrew has already forfeited his HRH title and military patronages - and since he's no longer a "working royal" he doesn't have any formal royal duties. It also signified that Buckingham Palace ceased being responsible for his conduct.

There have been proposals that the Royal Family should go a phase further and "banish" Prince Andrew from public life.

He's already not permitted to attend royal official events. Instead, his appearances are limited to private, family events, such as memorials. That circumstance seems expected to endure. Not least because as head of the Church of England, the King couldn't exactly be viewed prohibiting his brother from church services.

Continuing Concerns

But the Palace must be troubled by these continuous waves of scandal crashing over such a direct relative to the King. It endangers to overwhelm their own more high-minded projects. And it remains unclear what might still appear from the trawl of information surrounding Epstein.

Advocates against the monarchy say there should be a broader examination into what the Royal Family might know about Prince Andrew's association to Epstein.

"This isn't just about family. It's not a private matter," says a republican activist, leader of Republic.

The Duke of York's office has been contacted for response.
